Dividends and Corporate Actions on Stock CFDs
Although you don't own the underlying shares when trading stock CFDs, positions are still adjusted for dividend payments.
Long (Buy) Positions
If you hold the underlying position before the market opens on the ex-dividend date, then the dividend is credited to your account.
If you open your position on or after the ex-dividend date, you aren't eligible to receive the dividend.
Short (Sell) Positions
If you hold an open short position at the close of trading on the business day before the ex-dividend date, the dividend amount will be deducted from your account.
This reflects the typical price drop equal to the dividend on the ex-dividend date, which is passed on to short positions.
The Ex-Dividend Date
This is the cutoff date that determines eligibility for an upcoming dividend. To qualify for a dividend adjustment, your CFD position must remain open before the ex-dividend date.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about trading stock and ETF CFDs with Tickmill.
CFD stocks let you speculate on the price movements of individual company shares without owning the underlying asset. You can go long (buy) if you expect the price to rise or go short (sell) if you expect it to fall. Leverage is available, meaning you can gain exposure to a larger position with a smaller initial deposit. However, leverage also magnifies potential losses, and you should always use appropriate risk management tools, such as stop-loss orders and sensible position sizing, to help protect your capital.
Log in to your Client Area, open the dropdown menu next to your name, and select "W-8BEN Form". Complete and submit the form (your name and signature must match). Once submitted, a confirmation pop-up activates your stocks access. Log in to MT5, right-click in the Market Watch window, and select "Show All" to view all available instruments. The form takes a few minutes and only needs to be completed once. Corporate clients must submit the W-8BEN-E form via Document Management instead.
No. Tickmill charges no commissions on CFD stocks and ETFs.
CFD traders do not receive dividends directly, but corporate actions such as dividend payments trigger adjustments to open positions. On the ex-dividend date, long positions receive a positive adjustment credited to the account, while short positions incur a deduction. These adjustments are designed to offset the price change that typically occurs when a stock goes ex-dividend and are subject to the applicable withholding tax rate.
CFD stocks are available to trade Monday to Friday, 13:35 to 19:55 GMT. Trading hours are subject to change without prior notice, as liquidity providers may adjust schedules based on market conditions.
Standard leverage for CFD stocks is up to 1:20. During periods of significant market volatility, such as ahead of earnings reports or major corporate actions, leverage may reduce to limit exposure. For a full breakdown of leverage conditions, visit the leverage and margin page.
ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds) are instruments that track the performance of a basket of stocks or an entire index within a single trade. Trading CFD ETFs gives you exposure to multiple companies or sectors without concentration in a single stock. Popular examples include SPY (SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust), QQQ (Invesco QQQ Trust), and TQQQ (ProShares UltraPro QQQ ETF).
